Creation According to the Ragthorn Gnolls
As told by Naug Alee of the Ragthorn Gnolls in Saltbur.
“Cub, have I ever told you the story of Ragthorn? Great Hakrak made creation from his longing. This is the same longing we have for the hunt, for running out across the plains of our homeland, which are now far from us. This longing was first, then creation came from Hakrak’s mind. He saw his creation and wandered the plains. Then he saw the Mother of Earth and fell in love. He climbed to the top of the Mother of Earth and from her highest point he ascended and left creation behind. Afterwards, Mother of Earth birthed many children. One was Ragthorn. Another was Direfrost. Big brother of Ragthorn was Bloodtooth. Bloodtooth told Ragthorn, ‘Go down, out of Mother into creation and come back with proof. How will we leave Mother if we might fall into emptiness?’ Ragthorn went out and came back with a stone and Mother’s children celebrated. But Direfrost became angry. Then Bloodtooth said, ‘Ragthorn, go out and find us something to eat. Why would we leave Mother if we will starve?’ Ragthorn returned with a juicy rabbit he had captured and the children feasted. Bloodtooth looked at Ragthorn once more and spoke, ‘Ragthorn, bring us back something to live for. Why would we leave Mother with nothing to enjoy?’ Ragthorn returned with a beautiful flower he had found growing on a jagged, thorny bramble. Then the children left Mother and settled on Earth.”
“But Direfrost had grown angry and very jealous. He left with some others, like Bladefever, and Rotfur and they hunted the others. Bloodtooth, Ragthorn and the others grew tired of fighting and Bloodtooth said, ‘Ragthorn, we will leave creation now, and Direfrost, Bladefever and Rotfur will eat each other. Cross the ocean and bring back the purest water.’ Ragthorn crossed the ocean and brought back the purest water. Bloodtooth tasted it and said, ‘Ragthorn, go out again and cross the ocean, and leap from the edge of the earth, and bring back the breath of the universe.’ Ragthorn did as he was told, and brought back the breath of the universe. ‘Ragthorn, we are almost ready, now cross the universe, and bring back the heart of a star. Then we will know that we can pass through creation and depart.’ When Ragthorn returned again with the heart of a star, the children of Mother left creation behind, and Direfrost, Bladefever and Rotfur were left to hunt each other…”
